Flutist Lance Suzuki leads an exploration of how music history and poetry can inform the performance of this repertoire standard by Debussy.

Studying Debussy and the music of his contemporaries helps to contextualize this miniature piece within the larger arc of musical progress. Studying the words related to Syrinx helps to impart greater meaning and imagery to the notes on the page.

Flutist Lance Suzuki has been consistently praised for his “gorgeous” (NY Times), “captivating” (NY Concert Review) and “mesmerizing” (NY Classical Review) performances. He currently serves as Piccolo/Third Flute in the Hawaii Symphony and also appears regularly as Principal Flute of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra and the Mark Morris Dance Group Ensemble. He has performed as a chamber musician and soloist at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Marlboro and Bard Festivals, and live on NPR’s Performance Today. He holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and University of Southern California where he studied with Linda Chesis, Michael Parloff, Nadine Asin, Gary Woodward and in masterclasses with Paula Robison.
