Brian Luce: "The Flutist's Playbook"

Brian Luce, Yamaha Performing Artist and Professor of Flute at the University of Arizona’s Fred Fox School of Music, presents an online workshop for flutists of all ages AND parents!

In “The Flutist’s Playbook,” Dr. Luce draws on his experience as a flute professor, baseball and softball coach to show you how principles of sports science and physical training can help you to reach your goals as a flutist. In addition to providing tips for flutists of all ages, he will provide valuable insights for parents of young flutists on how to best support their musical growth. Includes tips on Stretching and Strengthening, Agility, Fluidity, Finesse and Finger Logic.

This workshop will be hosted on Zoom. All registered participants will be emailed a meeting link in advance of the workshop. You must register to receive the link. Admission is FREE and open to HFS members & School Partners only. Membership begins at $2/month for students and $5/month for adults.

Professor of Flute at the University of Central Florida, Nora Lee Garcia is in demand internationally as a soloist, chamber artist, and teacher. Nora Lee has been featured as a guest artist in Carnegie Hall and at flute festivals such as the French Flute Convention, III Convención AFE Sevilla, Festival Internacional de Flauta Monterrey, Peru Flute Festival, as well as numerous National Flute Association conventions and the National Flute Association Summer Series. As an orchestral and chamber musician, Nora Lee has performed under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas, Krystof Penderecki, and Karl Sollak, and with ensembles such as the Casals Festival, the Chautauqua Symphony, and the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. She currently holds the position of principal flute with the Bach Festival Orchestra of Winter Park and the Florida Chamber Orchestra.Brian Luce is the Professor of Flute at the University of Arizona and a Yamaha Performing Artist. He is a member of the Arizona Wind Quintet and Luce-Caliendo Duo. Dr. Luce has performed as principal flute of the Champaign-Urbana, Midland-Odessa, and Johnstown symphony orchestras and has performed with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Dallas Bach Society, Dallas Wind Symphony, Abilene Philharmonic, Keystone Wind Ensemble, and the Tucson Chamber Orchestra. As a soloist, he has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, Korea, Japan, and China and has performed concertos with orchestras in the U.S. and the Republic of Korea. He has been featured at music festivals of the National Flute Association, British Flute Society, Shanghai International Exposition, Soka International Harp Festival, Texas Flute Society, Florida Flute Association, Mid-South Flute Society, Las Vegas Flute Club, Albuquerque Flute Association, Flute Society of St. Louis, Arizona Flute Society, and Tucson Flute Club. His performances have been broadcast throughout the U.S. and his recordings are recommended references by music education associations including the ABRSM.

Acclaimed as “an authoritative soloist,” his Albany Records SACD, Music of the Superpowers: Sputnik, Spies, and the Space Race, has been lauded by The American Record Guide: “This release should be of particular interest for the less known, seldom recorded Denisov and Smirnova...everything on it is enjoyable from beginning to end. Brian Luce plays with flair and intelligence…” He has also performed the premiere recordings of works by Daniel Asia, Anatoly Boyarsky, Christopher Caliendo, William Mathias, Carrol McLaughlin, Anthony Plog, Jack Stamp, Hans Winterberg, and Galina Smirnova on the Naxos, Albany, Toccata Classics, Gault, and Citadel labels.

He has given recitals and master classes throughout the U.S., Europe, and Korea. Editions BIM and IntegrityInk publish his compositions, arrangements, and realizations. His performance and pedagogy articles have appeared in Flute Talk Magazine, and his dissertation, Light from Behind the Iron Curtain: Style and Structure in Edison Denisov's Quatre Pièces pour flûte et piano, earned the 2001 Morgan Outstanding Dissertation Award from the University of North Texas.

He has taught at universities in Texas, Illinois, and Pennsylvania and tutored numerous young flutists across the nation. Brian is a prizewinner of the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition, Myrna Brown Young Artist Competition, Mid-South Young Artist Competition, and Kingsville International Young Artist Competition. His principal teachers include Mary Karen Clardy, Kathleen Chastain, Jacob Berg, and David Etienne.

As an Arizona native and avid outdoorsman, Brian enjoys trekking afield the beautiful alpine regions of the state with his family. He coaches youth baseball and softball for Little League and serves as an executive board member.

An active recording artist, Nora Lee most recently recorded various Bach Cantatas for the Bach Festival Society Winter Park Florida and will release her first solo album on the Centaur label in 2021. Most notably, she can be heard on the soundtrack for the Sony Pictures film, The End of the Spear. Nora Lee has served as a judge on the panels of the International Flute Competition in Mexico City and the National Flute Association’s Chamber Music and Young Artist competitions. She has premiered numerous pieces such as Prelude and Dance by Howard Buss (winner of the 2004 National Flute Association Newly-Published Music Competition) and Gary Schocker’s Under the Sultan at the 2012 Florida Flute Association Convention as a featured artist on the gala concert. An avid researcher of flute pedagogy, Nora Lee has published several articles for Flute Talk Magazine.
