Take a Chance: Terry Riley's "In C"

  • Studio 909 @ Musicians' Association of Hawaii 949 Kapiolani Boulevard Honolulu, HI, 96814 United States (map)

This special event is an exploration and open reading of Terry Riley’s iconic “In C” (1964), a composition of 53 musical fragments for an indeterminate number of instruments that launched the minimalist movement in music. This workshop is FREE and open to all, including non-members and non-flutists. Register online to receive music in advance.

An interesting feature of In C is that much of performance is left up to chance based on decisions of individual musicians. You will choose what to play and for how long (within the composer’s structure). If you are enjoying a particular fragment, linger a bit longer. If it is too difficult, simply move on.

To participate in this unique experience:

  1. Register online (below)

  2. Receive your music (by email)

  3. Review the instructions

  4. Practice your part (approximately quarter=90-100)

  5. Show up and have fun

Minimalism and Indian Raga

Terry Riley’s music was greatly influenced by improvisatory and non-western music, especially the Indian raga tradition. Hear how another minimalist icon, Philip Glass, explores raga with the legendary sitarist, Ravi Shankar:

Feel joy in heart.

Learn the 53 Fragments of “In C”

Practice prep for performing Terry Riley's iconic classic, "In C." This is NOT intended as a performance of the piece, or a suggestion of how one performer might play his/her part. This simply goes through each of the 53 patterns, with the constant 8th notes as background, to give performers a chance to hear how the patterns should sound.
